Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise that emphasises the balance of strength, stretch and control throughout the body. It is a workout that will keep your body functioning as it ages and will enable you to keep doing what you love in life for longer.

The focus on alignment and posture corrects muscular imbalance and can help to improve conditions such as back pain, sciatica, joint pain and scoliosis and help to prevent problems that are likely to arise from incorrect muscle mechanics and recruitment.

We focus on strengthening, lengthening, mobilising, stabilising and monitoring all movement patterns to give your body what it needs. This can range from rehabilitation from an injury through to preventative actions to ensure you can continue your favourite life activities.

Pilates focuses on six principles: breathing, concentration, centring, control, precision and flow. You will notice that all of these things come into play during your Pilates practice.

Who created Pilates?

Pilates, originally named Contrology, was developed by a well-known physical trainer named Joseph Pilates (1883-1967). Joseph described Pilates as the science and art of coordinated body-mind-spirit development through a sequence of moves. He designed and built the Pilates equipment & the system of exercise.

Why do Pilates?

Pilates is good for anyone who is interested in reducing pain, improving fitness, posture, coordination, balance, freedom of movement and overall wellbeing.

Other benefits include:
  • injury prevention
  • injury rehabilitation
  • improved core strength
  • improved balance and flexibility

  • reduce and eliminate back and other joint pain

Pilates equipment

Many people think that Pilates is only done on a mat like yoga. Or, you may have heard of the Pilates reformer…the most commonly used Pilates apparatus.

But Joseph Pilates designed many pieces of equipment that were used to address particular issues & needs & to ensure continuous variety in the exercises.

We teach mat classes. And we teach reformer but not in a large group format. We believe that each exercise should be chosen for each client individually. This way we ensure that the class is designed for you, that you are receiving the attention that you need and deserve and the risk of you doing something that will cause injury or pain is minimised.

Our other equipment includes:

  • Cadillac
  • Wunda Chair
  • Ladder Barrel
  • Avalon (developed by Rael Isacowitz)
  • Small apparatus like the foot corrector, spine corrector, neck strengthener, airplane board & ped-o-pul.
